The s.s. 'Poldown' was a 1,370 gross register tons defensively armed British Merchant steamer built at the yard of Fevigs Jernskibsbyggeri of Norway. Prior to s.s. 'Poldown' she was named 'Pellworm' and 'Hauk'. On 9th October 1917 whilst en-route from Penarth for Boulogne she hit a mine laid by UC51 and sank 2 miles off Trevose Head, Cornwall. Eighteen crew members were killed, including the Captain. She was owned at the time by Lougher & Company of Cardiff but had been requistioned in 1917 by the Admiralty for WWI duties.
