s.s. 'Shrewsbury'

The s.s. 'Shrewsbury' was built at the Port Glasgow yard of William Hamilton & Company as a general cargo, single screw, steel hulled steamer launched during October 1898. She was of 3,223 gross and 2,079 net register tons being 329.7 ft. long x 45.5 ft. breath x 23.8 ft. deep and of 16.1 ft. draft. Her first owners were Austin Friars Steam Shipping Company Limited - Galbraith, Pembroke & Company of London.

There was a Board of Trade Inquiry into her loss whilst en-route from Penarth to Hong Kong via Singapore with a cargo of coal. She was lost at midnight on the 17th November 1904 hence some records state the following day and the BOT report states that she sailed from Barry and not Penarth. The following newspaper report and Lloyd's based entry, however, goes some way to confirm that she actually sailed from Penarth. [425]
