s.s. 'Meldon'

The s.s. 'Meldon' was a single screw, general cargo vessel, built at the Hebburn Yard of Robert Stephenson & Company Limited on the Tyne having been launched during October 1902 for the Morpeth Steamship Company Limited (J. C. Adam) of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She was of 2,541 gross and 1,572 net register tons being 310.0 ft. long x 43.1 ft. breath x 20.5 ft. depth.

At the time of her loss she was owned by the Dawson Steamship Company Limited of Newcastle. She was sunk as a result of hitting a mine (probably laid by U78) on the 12th February 1917, whilst on a voyage from Penarth bound for Scapa Flow, with a cargo of coal, off Garvelloch in the Firth of Lorne, Isle of Mull. She was taken in tow but sank at the mouth of Loch Buie. There were no casualties reported. [102]

photograph left : 'Props seen from the starboard side on the SS Meldon' - however, she was, in fact, a single screw vessel. The great photograph is a wonderful insight into the remains of a fine vessel, built with pride by the 'Geordies'. Dive Oban and Argyll obviously love and respect the grave and remains of this vessel. [916]

'The S.S Meldon is a 1572t 330ft, steel steamship launched in 1902 which now lies close to the coast of Loch Buie on the south coast of the Isle of Mull. A stunning wreck site and one of our favourite wreck sites to visit . . . . The ship was owned by the Dawson Steamship Co and was carrying coal from Penarth in Wales when she struck a mine field which had been laid by U-78 off the Garvellachs. The captain made a run for Loch Buie and ran her aground of the western shore of the loch before the ship sank.'
