s.s. 'Suez'

 

The s.s. 'Suez' was a iron hulled, single screw, general cargo steamer, built at the yard of Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Company Limited of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne having been launched during October 1881 for the Cie. De Navigation d'Orbigny Et Faustin Fils. of La Rochelle. She was of 2,125 gross and 1.387 net register tons being 286 ft. long x 36.3 ft. breath x 25.4 ft. depth.

The s.s. 'Suez' was sunk following a collision with the s.s. 'Dithmarschen' off Cabo Espichel, Portugal, whilst on a voyage from Penarth to Marseille with a cargo of coal on the 24th January 1888. [102]

The South Wales Daily News reported her sailing from Penarth Dock on the 19th January 1888 bound for Marseille. [325] [361]

 
Wreck of a Penarth-Laden Steamer - Feared Loss of Part of the Crew - 'A Lloyd's telegram from Lisbon states that the Suez, French steamer, from Penarth for Marseilles, foundered alter collision off L'Espichel on Tuesday morning. Twelve of the crew have been landed at Lisbon. Nothing is known of the remainder of the crew. Probably this was the steamer in collision with the Dithmarschen.' - The Western Mail [138] [361] 27th January 1888.
