The brigantine 'Viola' Official Number 66,408 cleared New York on the 8th February 1878 bound for Penarth was abandoned but the crew were taken off. - source : Casualties to Grain-Laden Vessels clearing from the Port of New York during the Year ended 30th June 1878. [1038]

 

Wrecks and Casualties - [Special Telegrams from Lloyd's Agents] - 'The barque 'Calcutta', which passed the Lizard Point on Tuesday evening, signalled having aboard the crew of the 'Viola', from New York for Penarth, abandoned at sea.' - South Wales Daily News [325] [361] 14th March 1878.
