Investigation into the Condition of the Ely River Subway 1991.
Introduction : In November 1989 Brian Colquhoun and Partners were asked by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation to investigate the condition of the Subway with a view to possibly reopening the structure to enable it to serve as a pedestrian link between Penarth Haven and the proposed Peninsula site to the Ferry Road redevelopment. To enable the inspection to proceed the subway first had to be dewatered. Tender documents were produced for dewatering the Subway and issued to five suitable contractors who had previously indicated a willingness to tender. Following appraisal of the tender returns, the contract was awarded to Northern Divers (Engineering) Limited of Hull. The Subway was pumped out during week commencing 8th April 1991, allowing a full condition survey of the Subway to be undertaken during the following week. On completion of the survey, the Subway was not re-flooded and the portal at the northern end was made secure. |
