Ring Nos. Description of Condition Comments
Photos
101-150 Deterioration of paint system progressing from lower ring segments to middle segments. Further areas of historic water ingress noted at joints between segments and rings. Condition of lower segments worsening and lamination of bolt heads noted for the first time. Lamination of cast iron surface first noted at Ring 140, depth 0.5mm. Surface condition of rings noticeably worse beneath the post 1976 tide-mark line denoting the flooded level as evidenced by orange coloured rust staining.

Prior to pumping for this survey water level had been coincident with the Subway floor adjacent to Ring 121.

151-200

Frequency of stalactites increasing and dripping water noted at Ring 162. Paint system still intact above flooded level tide-mark. Elsewhere condition continues to deteriorate with increasing chainage; surface corrosion and surface lamination of segments noted.

Flange thickness of segments increases from 29mm to 48mm at Ring 199.

201-250 No significant change to segment condition. Orange rust staining evident to entire surface of ring.

251-300 Thickness of surface lamination increases to 2.5mm; measured at segment flanges.
301-350 Water ingress and stalactites at Rings 335 to 345. Thickness of surface lamination measured as 2mm within segment pans.

351-400 No significant change in condition. Change in colour of iron oxidation from orange to black noted, possibly indicating water level before the Subway was deliberately flooded; the black colour indicating oxidation of iron in the presence of a reduced oxygen content.
Previously constant gradient starts to level off at Ring 360 approximately.
