Volume Ten - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Even more aspects - Penarth Dock in 1924 . . .

The Sub-Committee, the Shipowners' Association and the Dock Owners, and all connected with same, may do their utmost to renew and improve the facilities of the port, but until the whole co-operation of labour is given the full effect of the improved mechanical appliances is stultified.

I investigated the five recommendations of the visiting sub-committee and found the following evidence for their implementation or otherwise!

(1) That they fully support the project of the railway company in regard to increased siding accommodation and the policy adopted by the railway company in regard to providing standage for at least three days’ coal supply for the whole of the hoists in the dock.

I can find no evidence that increased standage for three days' coal supply was provided following this recomendation. This probably refers to capacity at Llandough Sidings ; a substantial new section of sidings had been authorised in January 1901 and are shown upon the track layout diagrams, however, this may have been undertaken at Penarth Junction (Radyr) where there were also extensive sidings. (2) All wagons to have doors fitted at each end to obviate the existing unnecessary delay in turning.

'In co-operation with traders, to secure more economical and efficient transport of coal, the Great Western Railway successfully initiated in August, 1924, the adoption of a 20-ton wagon as the new standard for the conveyance of shipment coal in South Wales.' - [723] [716] - see also Chapter entitled The Introduction of 20 ton Coal Wagons - 1923.
