Volume Eleven - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - some more aspects - The Calm Before the Storm - 1936 to 1940 and War . . .

1940 - The dock was reopened on 3rd December 1940 and over 5,000 men were trained there in the techniques of stevedoring; the logistics and techniques of loading and unloading ships efficiently for the war effort.

1943 - On 26th October 1943 a United States Navy Base was established at the dock under the command of Captain Arnold Winfield Chapin USN for the Eleventh Amphibious Force.

Following the transfer of the dock from TVR control to the GWR under the 1921 Railways Act for the regrouping of the railways, a precise audit of dock and harbour assets was undertaken by the GWR almost on an annual basis. These records are held at the Glamorgan Archives.
