Volume Eleven - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - some more aspects - Picturesque Penarth —an Ideal Seaside Residential Centre - 1907.

I stumbled across this article relating to Penarth in 1907, and thought it interesting to contrast the development of the town, its gardens and esplanade, against the harsh working conditions and dangers faced by those who worked in the mines, the docks and at sea, producing and shipping our steam coal.

Activity at Penarth Dock and the Ely Tidal Harbour spawned the wealth of the town and its popularity as a 'watering place' gathered great pace during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The following article is taken from 'South Wales - The Country of Castles' which was issued by the Great Western Railway Company of Paddington Station, London and published in December 1907. [716]

Picturesque Penarth — an Ideal Seaside Residential Centre.

Within twelve minutes' reach of Cardiff by the trains and rail-motors of the Taff Vale Railway lies Penarth, one of the most charming spots on the northern shores of Severn Sea, and richly endowed by nature with all the requirements of a popular and prosperous seaside residential centre.
