1930's - Esplanade & Pier Pavilion, Penarth - A postcard view dating from c.1930 which captures the essence of the resort with its wide esplanade and pier but lurking in the gap between the pier pavilion and Penarth Headland are those two, imposing searchlight relics of the possibility of war leading out from the Victorian era.
The war threat from Germany, which was realised within the memory of the adults taking the fresh air in the views above, and that threat which was shortly to become reality again within the decade as the Third Reich evolved.
The Reich evolved into a totalitarian dictatorship through the exploitation of Germany's post-WWI instability. It utilised propaganda, false economic promises and political violence to dismantle democracy led by Hitler after he became German Chancellor during 1933.
Oh, can you catch up with the three-wheeled, ice-cream salesman as he pedals away from us and get us both a large cone please?!
Please may Democracy and Freedom of Speech live forever! Another heritage postcard view held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] |
