c.1905 - J. Rank Limited - Atlantic Flour Mills - at Barry No. 2 Dock. A view from the rear of the building. I first became aware of this massive flour mill as I peered out of the art room window at the very top of the of the Cadoxton Secondary Modern School back in the early 1960's. [1149] [20230311]

Atlantic Mills, Barry, was one of the UK's largest flour mills with a characteristic dockside sitting, milling wheat imported from north America, as the name suggests. The mill was built in 1904, and had several phases of extension and remodelling. The last phase of modernisation dates from c. 1990 when the old mill was replaced by the new mill with state-of-the-art machinery installed by Buhler Brothers of Switzerland at a total cost of £11million. About 2,000 tonnes of flour were produced weekly from 2,400 tonnes of wheat leaving a residue of bran which was converted into cattle feed. The mill was the largest producer of the UK's `granary? flour (a registered trade-mark). However, falling consumption of flour from the post-war boom, with a 4% annual decline, eventually led to the closure of the plant in October 2013 and demolition in October 2014. [071]

1906 - Visit of Members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to Joseph Rank, Atlantic Flour Mills, Barry Docks - The power to drive the machinery of these mills is supplied by two triple-expansion engines of 700 I.H.P., built by Messrs. Wood Brothers, of Sowerby Bridge. The boilers, of which there are four, 30 feet by 8 feet, working at a pressure of 200 lbs. per square inch, were supplied by Messrs. Tetlow Brothers, of Hollinwood. A complete silo installation with band-conveying arrangements for conveying the grain is in operation, the transmitting arrangements being of a capacity of 120 tons of wheat per hour. The storage capacity of the grain silos is about 50,000 quarters. A complete wheat-cleaning and conditioning plant for preparing the wheat for the mill is installed, with a capacity of sixty sacks of flour per hour. The grain-conveying plant was supplied by Messrs. Spencer and Co., of Melksham, the flour-milling machinery by Messrs. Henry Simon, of Manchester, and the whole of the erection of the plant was carried out under the superintendence of the firm's staff. [178]
