Low Tide - Penarth.

Low Tide - Penarth.

Donkey Island - Penarth - Low Tide - Donkeys and children posing for the camera on Penarth Beach adjacent to the pier. The photograph was taken by W. Woodward but the date is not known, although it could either be later than 1931, since the Bijou Pavilion at the end of the pier is no longer visible, having been destroyed by fire in that year. However, the dress of the children suggests an earlier date and it is most probably during the period between 1895, when the pier was opened, and prior to 1907 when the Bijou Pavilion was built. Donkeys rides were first reported on the beach at Penarth by the Cardiff Times during 1864 - 'Mr. Marks, of Maughan-street, has bought a stud of donkeys, which will be kept on the beach for the accommodation of ladies and children who may feel inclined to enjoy a ride on the sands.' - Cardiff Times [019] [361] 7th May 1864.

The Kiddies' Favourite at Penarth.
The Kiddies' Favourite at Penarth - A postcard image borrowed from David Ings fine book entitled 'Penarth in old picture postcards'. [300] David comments that this postcard is dated 1928 and that the gentleman on the left is Bert Leddington and on the right is Alfred 'Arthur' Fellows of Ludlow Street. The animals apparently earned Penarth the nick-name of 'Donkey Island'. Many thanks to David for his amazing local knowledge! [20230219]
