This canal outlet to the sea was the forerunner of the Bute West Dock, Bute East Dock, Roath Basin and Dock and Queen Alexandra Dock at Cardiff, and Penarth Dock for the exporting of coal. It was not until the 1830's that coal exports surpassed iron.
