1916 - Dog Illegally Taken Ashore - (before Barry Police Court) - A. Sword, master of the steamer Yarborough, lying in Penarth dock, was charged with bringing into port a dog without a license from the Board of Agriculture.

Inspector C. Crash, Customs officer, gave evidence that he visited the ship on February 16th, and found a dog on board. Three days later the dog had been taken ashore.

Police-inspector Harris said defendant had informed him that one of his firemen had taken the dog to North Shields.

Defendant said he told the man not to take the dog away. He communicated with the police and the customs immediately on learning of the removal of the dog.

The case against the captain was dismissed, and a warrant was issued for the arrest of Rosado, the fireman. - Barry Dock News [140] [361] 3rd March 1916.

1861 - Letter from Penarth Tidal Harbour - During 2024, I found a reference in the Calderdale Collections of the West Yorkshire Archive [1327] to the Edwards family of Halifax, whom lived in a house situated above the historic Salterhebble Dock just outside Halifax. The Title is given as 'Copy of a Letter from William Henry Edwards, at Penarth Tidal Harbour, to his Aunt at Bank House, Salterhebble, West Riding of Yorkshire dated 18th November 1861.' [Cat. No. - WYC:1536/4]

The letter contains typical family memories and matters but a hand written note on the photocopied letter claims that its author died shortly afterwards 'whilst building a bridge at Penarth Dock.' I am unable to duplicate the document due to copyright restrictions, however, I was convinced that this explanation was inaccurate. A search found a newspaper report of the circumstances when William Henry Edwards met his maker. It is written in terms that would not be published quite so graphically in the 21st century!
