In 1799, the poet, T. Wilson, wrote on the subject of iron-rails, otherwise termed 'metal-plates,' as used for the tramways:

'God bless the man wi' peace and plenty
That first invented metal plates!
Draw out his years until five times twenty
Then slide him through the heavenly gates.'
