4th December 1946 - Image 3077 - The meandering River Ely leads finally to the Severn Sea and the 'Cut' to the Pier Head and Cardiff Dock entrances.
4th December 1946 - Image 3077 - The meandering River Ely [A] leads finally to the Severn Sea and the 'Cut' [B] which is a dredged channel to the Pier Head and Cardiff Dock entrances. The detail of the Penarth Head Battery [C] etc. (and the photo in general) is rather blurred. The image is credited to the Welsh Office. [1294]  [1292]

4th December 1946 - Image 3078 - A view slightly to the west of the previous photograph above. The Penarth Dock and Basin [A] feature with both the north and south piers [B] to the Penarth Dock which provide the distinctive trumpet shaped entrance. Two vessels [C] may be seen on a heading towards Cardiff Docks in the 'Cut' [D] and the entrance lock to the Queen Alexandra Dock [E] is clearly visible. The Queen Alexandra Dock was opened in 1907 and was of 52 acres, i.e. twice the area of Penarth Dock! The image is credited to the Welsh Office. [1294]  [1292]
