1st June 1962 - Image 0389 - This image is greatly significant to myself, in that many references as to the closure of Penarth Dock state that it happened in 1963. But in June 1962 there are no ships in the Dock or Basin! I see just a variety of small boats and the Pontoon at the head of the Dock. There are, however, still two sets of lock gates between the Dock and the sea in position and apparently the Pontoon was still operational until September 1962 according to Mr. Quinell the General Manager. (Mr. Quinell used to tip his bowler hat to me as we passed on the dockside; 'Morning Carder' ; 'Good morning Mr. Quinell'. Whatever, happened to courtesy??!
The Penarth Dock and Basin was empty of shipping and 'Closed' as at the 5th March 1962 as stated within the British Transport Commission's Shipping List.
The Pontoon was sunk in the dock by the 25th March 1963 and then it became the subject of judgment with legal precedent in the case of Penarth Dock Engineering Co Ltd v Pounds [1963] Lloyd’s Rep. 359.
