The following text is taken from Appendix A - Details of Illustrations:

The overall plan of the subway is based upon a 1 : 2500 Ordnance Survey map. Note that for clarity the subway is not shown in the conventional format for hidden detail. The section through the length of the subway represents the subway 'straightened out'. The section is based almost entirely on a verbal description featured in 'The Engineer' and dated 10th March 1899. It should not be regarded as an absolute section but more of an indication of what the subway probably looked like. The cross-section of the subway itself is also based on the same verbal description and again should be looked upon as possible section.
