Lighthouse Battery - Part of the plan borrowed from 'Guns Across the Severn' [1319] of the Lighthouse Battery showing, highlighted in green, the underground facilities necessary to service the gunners during combat at the rear of the Moncrief Pits. The lines in blue represent the lantern passageways for the placement of external illumination of the underground explosives storerooms.

Inside the Moncrief Pit - The vaulted passageway into the circular Moncrief Pit with the proximity of the lighthouse illustrated.
Inside the Moncrief Pit - The vaulted passageway into the circular Moncrief Pit with the proximity of the lighthouse illustrated - perhaps too close for comfort on times for the Trinity House personnel! The pit had a concrete floor and a coursed-stonework vertical section of wall leading to the vaulted brickwork above. Above this is a layer of heavy stone block work with a stone capping ring leading to the revetment beyond; that is the sloping embankment designed to deflect the effect of incoming nasties! [001]

Exploring the Cartridge and Shell Storerooms.

Exploring the Cartridge and Shell Storerooms - The two tunnels leading from the Moncrief Pit invited us to the inner vaulted stone and brickwork of the cross-tunnel with its dual chambers offset, which served as the cartridge and shell storerooms.  The lintel of the cartridge store is stenciled 'Cartridge store for 7ins guns I-II-III'. Within the walls of the inner chambers are lantern openings to enable lamps to be positioned safely from the lamp passage beyond the rear of each chamber. [001]
