Further exploration - A modified Moncrief Pit at Lighthouse Battery which was used during WWII as an air-raid shelter, witness the concrete exit and entry end walls of the structure but missing the corrugated-iron enclosures. These shelters consisted of a roll-formed, semi-cylindrical skin of corrugated-iron about 210 degrees in curvature. The original Nissen hut was designed during WWI by Major Peter N. Nissen [1871-1930]. Also note the curvature of the Victorian stonework - wonderful! [001]

Flat Holm remained the property of the War Department until, in late 1958, the Ministry of Defence sold the island to Trinity House for the sum of £235. [equivalent to £4,650 in 2024!]

1942 - Lighthouse Battery Under Construction - A painting by the outstanding female wartime artist Ray (Rosemary) Howard-Jones [1903-1996] whom was stationed on the island for some months. She was apparently educated at St. Hilda’s School, Penarth, but I was unable to find where that was. Can anybody enlighten me where St. Hilda’s was please? [629]
