It always amazes me that most people do not understand that a cubic metre of water weighs one metric tonne whereas seawater, especially when laden with particles and salt weights more. Then add the effects of the dynamic forces of tide and wind and waves and convolutions in flow, well, I always marvel when I look over that large expanse of water from Penarth Pier and consider that it rises and falls on a Spring Tide about 15 metres twice a day. The view on the return with Flat Holm and Steep Holm distant - the light is beginning to fade and buoys flash and mark the safe channels for navigation. [001]
