Ashley Hall Estate, Vere, Jamaica - Number of Enslaved People - 1809 to 1833 [1353]

What is the relevance of the above statistics to the Rev. John Ashley story?

I found during my research a statement that John Ashley was born in Jamaica, but in the year of his birth, 1800, a formal birth registration system did not exist in Jamaica and I am therefore not able to confirm this statement. However, he was aged between 9 and 33 years old in the timeframe of the above graph, which is based upon data published by the Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery in 2024, hence, John Ashley must have been fully aware of the origin of the income from the Ashley Hall Estate estate together with the fact that it was generated by the use of a significant number of enslaved peoples over an extended period of time. [1353] (years without entries are years where no records are available).

The following Acts of Parliament are significant landmark dates in relationship to the above statistics : -

1807 - Act for the Abolition of Slave Trade
1833 - Act for the Abolition of Slavery - effective 1st August 1834
1843 - Act for the more effectual Suppression of the Slave Trade
