Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Thirteen - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Penarth - born of the economic and geological shift from iron to coal . . . . .

c.1830 - The lower end of the Sea Lock pound at Cardiff.

c.1830 - The lower end of the Sea Lock pound at Cardiff. The cones of the ovens on the left belong to Guest's Glass Works built in 1824. The artist is unknown but the image is accredited to the National Museums and Galleries of Wales [120] and appears in the book 'The Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals - Vol. 2' [528]

The vessels distant lie at the coal wharfs just before the Sea Locks. On the far bank a gaggle of geese graze on the Dumballs marshlands. Notice the floating timbers and the timber-man working on the lighter at the right of the image. Behind the geese are buildings surrounding the Sea Lock Hotel and the lock-keepers dwellings. An old cannon is to be seen peeping out of the ground which appears to be being used as a mooring post. On the distant headland, the old church of St. Augustine's stands proudly upon the Penarth Head and is a key navigation feature for mariners approaching the entrance to the River Taff from the Severn River.

Cardiff Boundary Map of 1832.

1832 - Robert Kearsley Dawson [1798-1861], also of the Ordnance Survey, was appointed to produce accurate maps showing both the existing and proposed changes to the parliamentary boundaries. These maps were initially published in Reports from Commissioners on proposed divisions of Counties and boundaries of boroughs, in 1832, but were then republished together as Plans of the Cities and Boroughs of England and Wales in the same year. The green boundary line indicates the 'Old Borough' boundary whilst the red shows the proposed changes under the Parliamentary Boundaries Act of 1832. St. Mary's Parish is clearly defined on the map.

The blue lines suggest the location and approximate view of the artist who produced the above heritage record of the lower end of the Sea Lock pound at Cardiff at around the same date.
