Volume Thirteen - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Remarkable Connections - Darwin, FitzRoy, Hawkshaw & Wedgwood . . . . Four remarkable Victorians whose lives became linked through family, science, engineering and the development of Penarth Dock.
At first sight, Josiah Wedgwood, Charles Darwin, Admiral Robert FitzRoy and Sir John Hawkshaw appear to have little in common. Wedgwood was a pioneering potter and industrialist whose factory at Etruria helped transform British manufacturing. Darwin became one of the world's greatest naturalists after sailing aboard HMS Beagle under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy. Hawkshaw established an international reputation as one of Britain's foremost civil engineers, designing railways, docks, bridges and tunnels throughout the Victorian era. Yet these four remarkable men were connected in unexpected ways. Darwin was the grandson of Josiah Wedgwood and later married his cousin Emma Wedgwood, linking two of Britain's most influential families. His famous voyage aboard HMS Beagle was made under the command of Robert FitzRoy. [001] [AIX] |
