Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - The dock extension of 1883 . . .

The entrance to the new graving dock that never was, together with the entire western quayside was demolished within 20 years of its construction and the dock extended permitting a further four coal tips to be installed on the southern side being numbers 11 - 14. The dock was extended by 800 feet (243m) making the total new dock length approx. 2,900 feet (884m).

November 1880 - The Proposed Extension of the Penarth Docks - We are in a position to state that there is absolutely no truth in the statement published by a contemporary to the effect that the scheme for the extension of the Penarth Dock has been abandoned owing to opposition from Lord Windsor.

The scheme involves the removal of a part of the hill to the west of the dock, and negotiations were entered into with his lordship to require the right to deposit the soil removed on a price of his land. The payment demanded was higher than was anticipated, the noble proprietor having taken into consideration the prospective value of the land as a site for a dock, and on this account a hitch occurred, which gave rise to the rumour which has since obtained currency.

Lord Windsor has not offered any opposition to the scheme, and it is not even yet too late to hope that some arrangement will be arrived at by which the present difficulty may be overcome. - Western Mail [164] 19th November 1880.

September 1881 - The dock extension at Penarth, Glamorganshire, was commenced last week. Mr. H. 0. Fisher has been appointed resident engineer, and Mr. Walker who is just completing the extensive new docks at Swansea, is the contractor. - The Building News [1079] [499] 30th September 1881.

1883 - A detailed view of the Penarth Dock extension works looking eastward toward the four new coal tips dated the 2nd June 1883.
