Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - The demise of H.M.S. Exmouth at Penarth Dock - 1905 . . . H.M.S. Exmouth was the first ship to bear that name. Built in 1840 as a 90 gun sailing ship she had steam power added and served her country in the fleet until decommissioned, adapted as a training ship and lent to the Metropolitan Asylum in 1877. Renamed the T.S. Exmouth she was moored in the Thames estuary at Grays, Essex and served until 1903 when her hull was deemed unsafe. She was sold by auction, towed to Penarth and broken up during 1905.
