Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - The demise of H.M.S. Exmouth at Penarth Dock - 1905 . . . The South Wales press reported upon the last days of the T.S. Exmouth:- Chips of News - 'The Exmouth training ship is to be sold by public auction at the end of this month. Pending the mooring of new ship which is to take her place, lads under training will go into camp at Gore Farm.' The Aberdare Leader - [360] [361] 11th February 1905. Togo's Training Ship - 'The famous old training ship H.M.S. Exmouth, which was among the warships recently sold by auction, has been purchased by Mr. Norris, of Cowbridge-road, Cardiff, who is at present breaking up the Havannah in Penarth-road. The Exmouth will probably be brought to Cardiff to be broken up. Among the cadets trained on board the Exmouth was Admiral Togo, the famous Japanese admiral.' Evening Express [135] [361] 11th April 1905. Togo's Training Ship - 'The old wooden warship Exmouth, which during recent years was used as a training ship and was put up for auction some little time back, is expected to arrive at Cardiff about May 20 for breaking up. It will be remembered that on this vessel that Admiral Togo, the Japanese admiral, received his early sea training as a cadet. The vessel took part in the bombardment of Sveaborg, in the Baltic, at the time of the Crimean War. The purchaser is Mr. H. Norris, who is now breaking up the warship Havannah at Cardiff.' Evening Express [135] [361] 3rd May 1905. 'William Horsenail, a Barry veteran, in the employ of Mr William Thomas, auctioneer, read the paragraph in the press of the purchase by Mr H. Norris, of Cardiff, of the old wooden warship Exmouth with special interest. Horsenail served on the Exmouth for years, leaving in 1857. "They say," he remarked to our reported "that Admiral Togo served on her as a middy. I remember two Japanese youngsters on her, and Togo might have been one of them. If so, he had to rough it like to rest of them." Barry Herald [216] [361] 12th May 1905. An Old Warship - Purchased by Mr H. Norris, Cardiff - ' The old wooden warship Exmouth, which during recent years has lain in the Thames off the Essex coast and been used as a training ship, was some few weeks ago purchased by Mr Harry Norris for £4,200. The Exmouth is at present being patched up at Plymouth preparatory to being brought round to Penarth, where she will be broken up. . . . . |
