Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Working the Ely Tidal Harbour . . .

A gentleman named David Lloyd wrote of a visit to the Ely Tidal Harbour with his friend and their camera just prior to the Cardiff Bay development swallowing up the dereliction of the old warehouse and wharf and replacing it with the mundane! The link to his site is (click on link to open in a new window) : -

'Then Was . . .' of the River Ely Tidal Harbour and Warehouse Circa 1994.

David kindly gave permission to use selected photographs from his article which he describes as : 'Then Was… is the last resting place for some of my stories, photos and memories.' Many thanks for sharing them with us and for your contribution to the Penarth Dock story!

David commented of the rotting posts : 'The structures on this side of the warehouse were the most impressive. I am not sure how you’d class them, be it moorings, docks, dolphins or wooden quays. Whatever they were they had a beauty all of their own. Weathered, rotting, festooned with rusting metal and scraggy rope, they were imposing and in the right light, highly photogenic.' I agree wholeheartedly with his sentiment. Once again, Many Thanks and Best Wishes David for your kindness and for the demonstration of your professional talents!
