Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The Penarth Harbour, Dock & Railway Co. dispute with Messrs. Smith, Knight & Co. . .

1860 - 1861 - Smith & Knight at the Penarth Harbour and Docks ordered two steam engines from Manning Wardle & Company of the Boyne Engine Works, Jack Lane, Hunslet, Leeds in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The Leeds Engine Builders website holds two records of Class D, 0-4-0ST, Standard Gauge steam engines. Works number 13 was named 'Bulldog' and built in 1860 whereas number 28, of 1861, is nameless. [567]

These engines would probably have looked similar to that illustrated below and as shown at the 1862 London Exhibition. The catalogue entry specifies : 'For prices and further particulars apply to Manning, Wardle and Co.' [015] [016]

The relationship between Smith & Knight and the Directors of the Penarth Company became somewhat strained due to the slow progress of construction works at Penarth. It is evident that the original 1861 deadline for completion was wildly optimistic. Chancery action was initiated to prevent Smith & Knight continuing their contract and then the Penarth Company impounded materials and equipment in order to continue the works.

1861 - Penarth, Cardiff - "Messrs. Smith and Knight, contractors for the new harbour at Penarth, have it is said, to all intents and purposes, given up the contract. There are upwards of 800 men now employed on the works, which are being carried on by the Penarth Tidal Harbour Company." The Building News [547] 25th October 1861.

May 1862 - Mr. George Knight of Messrs Smith & Knight at the opening of the Metropolitan Railway Company in London in the company of Mr. and Mrs. Gladstone.
