Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The end of the line for the Taff Vale Railway - 1921 VIII. - Land, Property, &c., Not Forming Part of the Railway or Stations.
'IX. - Other Industries' were also 'Not Applicable to This Company' and 'Returns X. and XI. omitted under authority of Ministry of Transport.' In the section 'XII. - Engine Mileage.' there is a breakdown of miles run by goods and passenger (coaching) trains. In the case of loaded trains the coaching train mileage was 820,506 and the goods mileage was 606,678, a total of 1,427,184 miles. The shunting mileage for goods trains was an incredible 1,142,799 miles. The total engine miles for all activities was a staggering 3,117,076 miles (the figure for 1920 being 4,126,746 miles). For comparison then, in 1921 the engines of the TVR chugged their way the equivalent of six return and one single journey to the moon - I wonder how many shovels of coal that took! Section 'XIII. - Passenger and Traffic Receipts'. 56,926 1st Class, 172,614 2nd Class and 6,692,061 3rd Class, a total of 8,021,403 passengers traveled on TVR passenger trains. This total included 1,099,802 passengers of a Class referred too as 'Workmen'. This Class is virtually extinct today! The total number of passengers of all classes in 1920 was 10,942,319. |
