Brain, David Thomas, a seafaring man, being charged under arrest with stealing a gold scarf ring, set with diamond, value £10, by violence from Alfred Hill, a ship repairer.
Prosecutor said he was on his way home from a public house about 11 o'clock on Monday night, and sat down on the pavement in front of his house in Paget-terrace, when prisoner came up, and having some words with Hill, he seized the latter by the throat, and threw him down. Hill got up and went into the house, when he missed his scarf and ring. An hour or two later prisoner went into the house of a boarding master named Macchiavello in the same street. Thomas was bleeding from the left ear, and complained of having been robbed.
Two constables happened to be present on other business, and one of them "tapped" the prisoner's pocket, and found there was money in his pocket. The constable searched the accused, and found 13s. in money and the stolen ring in his pockets, but Thomas said a watch and chain which Macchiavello had lent him were missing. Thomas was arrested on a charge of highway robbery at the Ship Hotel on Tuesday evening by P.C. Mendus (97), and in reply to the charge the accused said he was innocent. - Prisoner now pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months hard labour.' - Barry Dock News [140] [361] 22nd August 1902.
