The Penarth Road and River Ely Bridge Crossing :

So as not to confuse the toll charges for crossing over the River Taff swing bridge with the toll introduced for crossing the River Ely on the Penarth Road, I decided to add the following info :

• 1860 - Powis's 'Bus - two newspaper advertisements from 1860. An omnibus service between Cardiff and Penarth town and the ferry service between Bute Docks and Penarth. These advertisements are taken from the chapter 'Crossing the River Ely'.

• 1867 - The Cardiff and Penarth Road Act : 'An Act for authorizing the Maintenance and Repair of the Road leading from Cardiff to Penarth, with Bridges thereon, and the Construction of a new Road and Bridge, and levying of Tolls ; and for other Purposes.' [538]

• 1899 - There was an attempt to repeal the Act in 1899 by Cardiff Council : 'To repeal the Cardiff and Penarth-road Act, 1867, and Sub-sections (E) and (F) ' of Section 14 of the Cardiff Corporation Act, 1894, and to provide that the Cardiff and Penarth-road, made under the powers of that Act, and the soil thereof, and the bridges over the rivers Taff and Ely, shall vest in and be maintainable by the Corporation as a public highway', free of all tolls in respect of animals or vehicles passing along the same, and to provide for the making of compensation in respect of the extinction of tolls.' - London Gazette [100] 24th November 1899.

• 1939 - The Cardiff and Penarth Road Act 1867 and Cardiff Corporation Act 1930 : proposals to acquire rights and abolish toll charges on Penarth road bridge. Documents in the period 1939 - 1956 - National Archives, Kew, London. [539]
