Cardiff - The Hayes and Free Library.

• Cardiff - The Hayes and Free Library - The Public Library, which handsome building was recently enlarged, fronts upon a small square which on a Saturday is noisy with Cheap Jacks and the vendors of quack medicines, gathered round the statue shown, which is that of a local politician. A Raphael Tuck & Sons " Oilette " postcard posted in 1914 when postage was a staggering halfpenny equal to 0.208 new pence! Another Raphael Tuck & Sons Limited postcard from the Tuck's archive. The politician on the podium was of course Mr. John Batchelor one of the original proposer of Penarth Dock. A 'quack' is slang for a doctor that is suspected of not have the correct qualifications! I used to be sent by my Mum to the 'Quack' or Doctor, when I was unwell. Does anyone know what a 'Cheap Jack' is? Perhaps it is related to a 'Jack of all trades'. Does anyone know the meaning of this local slang??
