The depth of water at the berth varies from 20 ft. ordinary neap tides to 30 ft. ordinary spring tides. A jetty, fitted with hydraulic cranes, etc., affords facilities for the discharge of cargo or ballast, and there are extensive wharves belonging to the South Wales Public Wharf and Transit Company, which provide accommodation for cargoes of grain, flour, and general merchandise, as well as a large and complete petroleum installation. The premises on the north side of the Ely are connected with the dock by means of a subway under the river. The dock superintendent, with whom the writer made the tour of the dock, is Mr. Samuel Thomas, who has occupied that position under the general manager, Mr. A. Beasley, for many years.

• Old Ferry, River Ely.
• Entrance to Subway Under River Ely.
