Volume Ten - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Even more aspects - Penarth Dock and Llandough Fields Reclamation Report : 1989 . . .

Such had been the dependency of the dock on the railways, since the dock was opened, that the only vehicular access to the dock off the Penarth Road was through a low headroom tunnel under the railway sidings, at the same location as the present access bridge.

Finally in 1963, the dock was closed to shipping and in 1971 it was sold by British Rail, to Penarth Commercial Properties Ltd. Partial filling of the dock was carried out between the "extended" dock and the "original" dock, enabling the extended dock to be filled with domestic rubbish. In 1981, the dock, together with surrounding land, was bought by the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council and a scheme was developed to provide the present new access road from the Penarth Road to the dock and to erect a dam in the dock such that a marina could be built on the seaward side and the 14m deep dock filled with domestic rubbish on the other side. Although superstructures were removed from the dock sides, essentially the dock walls remain as originally constructed, whether around the marina or now buried under rubbish and fill. The tipping of domestic rubbish is due to be completed in February 1989.

In recent years, the remaining dock has been renovated as a marina and new housing erected around the basin.
