Volume Ten - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Even more aspects - Penarth Dock and Llandough Fields Reclamation Report : 1989 . . . Area 6 - South of the dock to the escarpment : As with other areas the main changes have related to railway use. When the dock was extended it was necessary to add two tracks to each additional coal staithe. Access across the railway complex was made easier for workers in Penarth by the construction of a pedestrian subway, opposite the lowest part of the escarpment. Little change took place near the basin and lock apart from the construction of small buildings at the beginning of the century. Remaining buildings in this area were removed in the early 1980's to make way for the more recent development of the area for housing and the conversion of part of the former dock into a marina. Area 7 - Escarpment : After the dock was opened, the inclined railway lines on the escarpment used to serve former lime kilns, were removed and the area developed as allotment gardens to serve the rapidly growing population in Penarth. Little change has taken place this century, apart from the construction by the local authority of blocks of flats overlooking Cardiff Bay. Area 8 - Dock : The development of the dock and its lapse into disuse by the late 1950's are referred to above in the brief history of the area. However, since then there have been various developments and at present the former dock is divided into three distinct areas, separated by two access roads across the dock. The three areas may be considered as follows:- After the abandonment of the dock the first significant activity, in 1971, was the tipping of material in the dock to form a causeway between areas a) and b). This provided the basis of an access road to cross the dock area and offered the potential of a refuse tip site in area a). |
