However, the tenant has been unwilling to cooperate in this sort of dealing ; all he wanted were new 'gents', a proper cellar to save him the terrible difficulties of keeping living beer in a warm room for the summer, and a less troublesome heating systems. He wanted to do it HIS way.

Now a compromise has finally been reached and work will start shortly on a small single storey extension with a large beer cellar, new gents toilets and an oil-fired boiler (Ashley finds it no joke, on top of the normal chores connected with a publican's job, lighting five coal fires every day in winter before starting routine work).

The two smaller rooms will have their separating walls removed, and with it the redundant hearths. The fireplace in the large bar also goes to allow for a proper servery to be arranged.

Sadly, without the substantial chimney-breasts to support them, the characteristic tall chimneys must also go, The refurbished servery area will also be provided with beer engines to serve HB and Bass. Ashley remembers when the Red House had these before, with tall, ornate handles, but these cannot be replaced.
