Volume Eleven - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - some more aspects - A House of Character - The Red House Inn . . .

A compromise then, but a sensible one with advantages for everyone involved, and a pointer to the concept that the whole "works" is NOT necessary whenever a pub requires improvement (and the Red House would have made a spiffing, money-spinning, plastic road-house).

Even so, it's certain that Ashley, in spite of the laborious tasks entailed at present, will have a tear in his eye when the builders move in in a couple of weeks' time. We can also see that an individual tenant does not have to bow to a company's "better judgment" if he chooses to remain adamant about maintaining the homely feel of his place of business and residence.

Obviously the Red House will more than repay a visit for some hand-pumped HB and Bass as soon as alterations are complete (about 5 months), but individuals in the vicinity might well pop down there in the near future for a last pint straight from the cask in this most welcoming and individual pub.

The Red House pub was the scene of a number of incidents over the years.

1875 - Penarth - A Man Found Dead on the Beach — An inquest was held yesterday at the Red House, Tidal Harbour, before Mr E. B. Reece, coroner, upon the body of an unknown man, who was found dead on the beach on the 26th inst., at about 11.40 a.m. Thomas Brimble and Mrs Yorath gave information to Inspector Adams, who said the men gave the following description of the deceased :—From 45 to 50 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches in height, hair sandy, bald on the top of the head, small whiskers about an inch and a half under the ear, and clean shaven.
