It was finally opened in April 1884 and brought the length of the main dock up to 2,900 feet and the area up to 23 acres.

2.4 - Other Construction work carried out at Penarth Dock

Several quite important construction works were carried out at Penarth Dock in addition to those already mentioned, and although these are not quite as relevant as those discussed earlier they are interesting and worthy of further mention. They include the building of jetties, the reclamation of land and the construction of a subway.

2.4.1 - Jetties

Since the sea entrance of Penarth Dock protruded beyond the shelter of Penarth Head it was necessary to construct some form of protection for vessels entering and leaving the dock. When the dock was originally built this protection was provided by a short jetty on the south side of the sea entrance and a mooring post on the north side. The jetty was approximately 150 feet long with a mooring post roughly opposite the end of the jetty.

At about the same time that the dock was extended a second jetty was built on the north side of the sea entrance to replace the mooring post. This jetty was also about 150 feet long.
