Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Report upon Penarth Dock - 1984 . . . They include 'The History of the Port of Cardiff', written by E. L. Chapell and published in 1939, 'The Taff Vale Railway', written by D. S. M. Barrie and published in 1950, 'The growth of Penarth', written by N. A. Voake and unpublished, 'Old Penarth', written by Ernest T. Bevan, dated 1949 but never published, 'The History of Penarth Dock and Other Items of Interest', written by D. G. Hopkins, dated 1947 and published by the Associated British Ports and 'Cardiff and the Valleys : Architecture and Townscape', written by John B. Hilling and published in 1973. It should be noted that these references are by no means the only sources of information about Penarth Dock. They represent only the sources used to prepare this document, namely those which are mainly concerned with the overall site, walls and sluicing arrangements.
Appendices . . . . Appendix A - Details of Illustrations Figures 1a, 1b and 1c All these figures are loosely based on a plan annexed to an Agreement dated 5th June 1857. Figure 1a includes information taken from a document written by Ernest T. Bevan and dated 1949. This information concerns the boat-building yard and the 'Pilot's Cottage' and these have been placed on the plan in what is thought to be their approximate locations. Figure 1b includes information taken from recent plans to show the approximate new course of the River Ely and outline of the dock as it was at the time. Note that the reclamation of land at Grange Point to provide more area for Ely Tidal Harbour is not shown. Figure 1c shows the outline of the dock as it was in 1884 based upon recent plans. Again details of the north side of the River Ely have been left off the plan. |
