Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Report upon Penarth Dock - 1984 . . .

Figures 2a, 2b and 2c.

All these figures are based upon a 1 : 1250 Ordnance Survey map of the dock with details of entrance jetties taken from other sources.

Figure 2a takes its details from a number of early plans of the dock,

Figure 2b includes information taken from a plan published in a book entitled 'Harbours and Docks', written by L. F. Vernon-Harcourt and dated 1885, whereas

Figure 2c is based on the fact that although the extended jetty is featured on plans dated in the 1920's the absence of earlier plans and the fact that the entrance channel was deepened in the 1890's seems to indicate that it dates from this time.

Figure 3

Figure 3 is based on a report in 'The Engineer' dated 10th March 1899 stating that 'considerable reclamation of the river foreshore is in view' coupled with the change in outline of the area of the foreshore seen in plans dated before and after 1899.

Figure 4

The overall plan of the subway is based upon a 1 :2500 Ordnance Survey map. Note that for clarity the subway is not shown in the conventional format for hidden detail. The section through the length of the subway represents the subway 'straightened out'. The section is based almost entirely on a verbal description featured in 'The engineer' and dated 10th March 1899. It should not be regarded as an absolute section but more of an indication of what the subway probably looked like. The cross-section of the subway itself is also based on the same verbal description and again should be looked upon as possible section.

Figures 5a and 5b

The outline plan of the dock in both cases is based on a plan taken from a 1920 Taff Vale Railway Handbook.

In the case of figure 5a this plan has been altered to reflect the shape of the dock before it was extended.
