Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Report upon Penarth Dock - 1984 . . .

Figure 11a - Site of the Penarth floating dry-dock. It should be noted that details of the floating dry-dock have been left off the figure since they are not relevant to the quay alterations made to accommodate the dry-dock. It should also be noted that in the overall plan of the site the north-west corner of the dock was fitted with a platform extending over the water at quay level. This is not shown in the plan but would have coincided with the edge of the adjacent plan of the pontoon.

Figure 11b shows the cross-section through one of the slots has been drawn in bold lines for clarity and again the finer detail of the dry-dock have not been included.

Figure 12

This figure is not intended to represent the gates at Penarth Dock but merely to illustrate the shape of gothic arched gates.

Figure 13

Again this is not intended to represent the gates at Penarth Dock but merely to illustrate the attachment of the gates to the quay wall.

Figure 14

This figure is based upon a photograph of the gate taken during the construction of the dock. Some details have been included that were unclear in the photograph. It should be noted that this figure represents the original gate which was removed and replaced in the 1920's. Note also that only a single gate is shown in a closed position. The adjoining gate has been left out of the figure for clarity.

Figure 15

This figure is based on another illustration from 'Docks and Harbours' by L. F. Vernon-Harcourt. The original illustration was to a scale of 1:400 and labelled as Plate 15, figure 7. It included some detail of the sluicing arrangements and these have been excluded from this figure, in order to show clearly the arrangements for opening and closing the gates. It is not known precisely what form the machinery for operating the gates took or where precisely it was sited. The plan does not indicate whether the machinery was sited below the quay level or on top of it.
