Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Report upon Penarth Dock - 1984 . . . Figure 16 This figure is based on the same original as figure 15. The overall outline originates fro a 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map and the swing-bridge details come from a 1:1250 Ordnance Survey map. As already has been mentioned the details of the sluicing arrangements come from Plate 15, figure 7 of Vernon-Harcourt's book. This only showed details for the inner end of the lock and details of the outer end shown in the figure have been derived from those of the inner end. Note that the gates are shown with top decking in place thus obscuring the curved front face of the gates. Also note the size of both aprons has been estimated since these are not included on the original illustration. Figure 17 This figure is based on Plate 15, figure 8 from 'Docks and Harbours'. Again the original illustration was at a scale of 1:400 and it has been reproduced to a scale of 1:100 to allow comparison with figures 9 and 10. The reason for showing the wall as a cross-section is that the original illustration was a section of Plate 15, figure 7. One interesting point is that the heights for H.W.O.S.T. and H.W.O.N.T. are lower than those of the main dock walls. Since there were derived from the original drawing rather than explicitly stated these may be due to inaccuracy in the illustrations from the book. Figure 18 This figure comes from the same source as figure 17 and also represented a section from Plate 15, figure and labelled as Plate 15, figure 8 in the book. It should be pointed out that both this figure and figure 17 are drawn looking westwards along the lock chamber. In this figure the change in the foundation of the wall should be noted together with a much more substantial cross-section of the wall itself. |
