Figure 19

This figure in terms of overall outline is based on a 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map. Information about the position of the gate recesses is taken from an illustration in 'Engineering' dated 15th July 1898 and labelled as figures 1, 2 and 3.

The sluiceway details are based on those of the lock but their position and arrangement are pure speculation based upon the theoretical sluicing arrangement which would satisfy the sluicing requirements of the entrance.

Figure 20

This figure is based upon another illustration from 'Engineering' dated July 15th 1898 and labelled figures 9,10 and 11. Although only one chain path is shown it is unlikely that any of the other chain paths at the sea entrance of the lock would be different to any large degree.

This particular chain path is the one at the north-west side of the sea entrance. Perhaps one note of caution should be mentioned and that is that there appears to be little space between gates for chains to pass up through the side wall at the optimum angle.

Figure 21

This figure is based on photographs taken at the time the storm struts were fitted and the of the area as it looks at the current time. [c.1984]

Exact size is estimated and although the pattern of the framework is correct the details of which piece passed in front of another are not totally correct.

It is interesting to note that these storm struts were operated by the direct application of hydraulic rams. These were grouped around a pivot near the top of the side wall and can still be seen.
