Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - The Bristol Channel District Guide - selected articles - [1934 Edition] . . . . With the rearguard on board, the " Barry " left Suvla Bay for good, and steamed to Imbros, where she remained the night, and then proceeded to Mudros. A Narrow Escape. After running the Kaffala Ferry between Imbros and Mudros, the " Barry " went to Syra, an island of the Greek Archipelago, for repairs. Then she was put on ferry work, on the old route, until Christmas Eve of 1916. One afternoon a large mine was sighted under the bows, and, though the hull cleared the danger, it was twice struck with the paddles. Fortunately, however, for the " Barry " and all aboard, it did not explode, though the vibration of the impact was felt all over the ship. The crew made short work of the mine, however, and promptly sunk it with their three-pounder and rifle fire. Next, the " Barry " was on duty at Salonika, and carried troops, stores, guns and ammunition to Katrina, in the Gulf of Salonika, which landed under Mount Olympus. She was bombed by aeroplanes while on this duty. After a week or two here, once again she worked the Imbros - Mudros ferry. Relief Party arrives. In June of 1917, a relief crew of the Mercantile Marine Reserve arrived for the " Barry, " and the crew, who for over two years had faced the dangers from land, sea and air in the Dardanelles, were shipped aboard the " Implacable, " for " Blighty. " The battleship proceeded to Devonport, and thence to Portsmouth, where the " Barry's " gallant band were paid off and discharged. The paddles of the " Barry, " however, still continue to churn the waters of the Mediterranean, though her name was altered to " Barryfield, " as a destroyer bearing the same name as the Bristol steamer was attached to the naval force. Until the end of hostilities, the staunch vessel, which was built for pleasure and not for the game of war, stayed out East. |
