But what they accomplished, and what, perhaps, we have failed to do full justice to in this short description of their wonderful work, is another page of glowing history in the annals of British ships. Certain it is that in future the White Funnel Fleet will mean more to Bristolians than ever before : and, beneath the pleasing colours worn in peace-time, will be remembered that dull grey tint which they donned when they went away to " do their bit " in throttling the German menace. Two outstanding facts must not be forgotten in conclusion. When they first went away the steamers were manned entirely by local men, and, although two White Funnels were lost, other vessels of the same fleet were able to rescue all the Bristol men aboard.
