A A are portions of the upright framing of the staith, B is the tip, and C the shoot. The wagon door D is hinged along the top and E E are the fastenings. The latch F is pivotted at f upon the buffer plank G so as to work vertically. The shape of the latch below the pivot f may be varied to suit the requirements of any particular case. The lower arm of F is heavier than the upper one, so that its tendency is to swing downwards until checked by the loop H. The length of the short arm of F is such that when the lower arm is pulled or pushed the nose g will stand below and clear of the lower edge of the door D, and when F is released the nose will stand up above the headstock G, and if the door D is shut, be in front of it, thereby locking it. A chain, J, is led from the outer end of the lower arm which is cranked and continued under the wagon to a fixed point I, and the length of J is adjusted so that when the wagon is tipped the chain will be taut at a point in the tipping motion which will leave enough of the latter to provide for the subsequent pull on the chain to pull the nose g away from the before the wagon door D. The motion of the lower arm may also be obtained by pushing instead of pulling. (Accepted 4th May, 1895.) - The Railway Engineer [1378] [499] July 1895.
