Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - Imports and Exports to 1908 . . .

This postcard dates from around 1907 and shows the outdated coal tips. The northern quay had dual use, they were used to moor ships awaiting loading with coal and as the import quays.

A view which appeared in the 1908 South Wales Coal Annual [039] of one of the new generation of coal tips on the southern quay which replaced the older tips. Note the unusual cross section of the ships hull - these were known as "turret ships".

A drawing of the cross-section of a turret ship hull which explains why they were suited for the transportation of bulk dry cargos such as coal.
