Coal output and shipments increased progressively through the Edwardian period (1901 - 1911) and the peak occurred in 1913 when the total trade through the Port of Cardiff (which included the Bute Docks, Penarth Dock and Ely Tidal Harbour and Barry Dock) was 30,766,000 tons. The breakdown of this total trade was that the Bute Docks at Cardiff shipped 13,677,000 tons, Penarth Dock and Ely Tidal Harbour shipped 4,661,000 tons and Barry Docks the remainder of 11,736,000 tons.
